Coaches Spotlight: Paul Morgan, 395 Starz

How did you first get involved with the Starz program?

I first heard about Starz when I began coaching at Fallbrook. Then, I reached out to the Program Director about starting a club team in our area. Adrenaline was very supportive of what I was trying to do and helped me get my team up and running.

What has been your favorite coaching moment so far?

The entire first season of our middle school program! We were a group of no names from multiple programs (Fallbrook, Temecula Valley Lacrosse, and Snakes Lacrosse) who came together and beat established programs that had been around 2-3 years longer than ours. The group was made up of coachable, blue-collar players. Many of these kids (Chris Painter, Cortland Mangio, Grant Christman, Nate Stutzman, and Isaac Mattecheck) are now playing  on the 395 Starz HS Elite team.

How have you been able to grow 395 Starz so rapidly?

We made a jump from two teams to six teams in one season, but we try to keep 395 rooted in the core values of the way lacrosse is played in our area.  395 has grown through word of mouth via social media with the people at Adrenaline helping us grow our reach. Additionally, the most established high school and youth programs in the Inland Empire support the program, so other programs have begun sending their players to 395 as well.

How have you managed this growth?

Managing this growth has been hard because of the timing; I had barely started school at Cal State Fullerton when I began 395. Luckily, I had a lot of help from Gary Dizon and Amy Bartz. They helped with the administrative part of managing teams which allowed me to focus on the lacrosse side of things. This past season a group of parents from the Oceanside Youth Lacrosse program were very supportive as well. I hope to continue building relationships with youth programs in our area (Fallbrook, Temecula, Murrieta, Valley Center, and Corona). Rory Doucette, [from Adrenaline] understands what I am trying to do and has become supportive of my goals for 395 and the Inland Empire lacrosse community.

Who are your biggest influences as a coach?

Karl Rohlin. He is the Great Oak HS Varsity coach and my 395 Elite head coach. 95% of what he has does for lacrosse is done for free and it motivates me to do the same for 395 players.  When I was 16, he had clinics every Saturday in Temecula that I would attend. Kyle Morrison, who was my coach at Cal State Fullerton, also taught me a lot about how to play the game with more patience and to become more of a technical player. Coaches like them are the reason why I continue to coach. I sometimes just sit and watch how they run practices. I try to take everything these coaches have taught me and use the parts I liked the most on the teams I coach.

How do you motivate your athletes?

I’ve always tried to take a personal approach to coaching.I want these players to understand that they can surpass anything I’ve ever done and go on and play NCAA D-1 Lacrosse if they are motivated and willing to put in the hard work. On top of that, I am able to help 395 players get elite recruiting opportunities by nominating them for events like High Rollers and teams like West Coast Starz.

What is your coaching style?

My coaching philosophy is that if you make a player realize that you care about their well-being and they understand that you will always give them 100%, they tend to play “harder” for you on the field and buy into the system that you're trying to implement. I am very passionate about Lacrosse and have had to work extremely hard because the sport didn’t come easy to me. I try to show the players in my entire program that I am committed to them and will do anything in my power help get them recruited to play college lacrosse. I begin each practice day by assisting the youth team and stay all the way through the HS Elite practices.  I feel that my presence at every practice shows my dedication to growing the program. Focusing on quality what parents and players want to see.

What has your experience been like at MCLA school Cal State Fullerton?

Being team President of the CSU Fullerton Lacrosse team came with some advantages. I was able to get local schools to host pre-season scrimmages and regular season MCLA games. Coaches in the conference voted and felt that I had earned 1st Team All-SLC and 3rd Team All-American.

What do you notice as a coach that you might not have in your playing days?

The importance of a strong feeder program cannot be understated. Programs like Great Oak have been raising their profile into the upper echelon of lacrosse programs because their feeder programs are well established. Players are going into HS with 3-4 years of Lacrosse experience. This allows us to focus on higher level coaching and teaching them the offensive and defensive systems that they will be running at the next level.

If you could change something about lacrosse, what would it be and why?

I build a Lacrosse only field centrally located in Fallbrook. All of the Inland Empire programs would play there, so we wouldn’t have to travel so far for games. Next, I would eliminate the animosity between programs that sometimes exists. All of the Starz programs are able to work together for the greater good, so my relationship with many of the boys in the program has been more of a family relationship. I’m trying my best to get the newer players and parents to understand what we are trying to do.

PC: Jeff Shorsher

2013 Company Statistics: View Full image here: http://adrenalinelacrosse.com/ftpimages/ADRLN_2013_STATISTICS.jpg

Every year Adrenaline puts together annual company-wide statistics to track the success of our mission as advocates for our core athletes.  Aside from our lacrosse inspired lifestyle and performance apparel lines, we focus much of our efforts on lacrosse events—covering the needs of the core lacrosse athlete on and off the field.  Last year’s info graphic showed rapid growth of western lacrosse players on a national stage. There was an explosion of lacrosse in nontraditional areas that were indicative of Adrenaline’s influence on fringe markets still considered the far and undiscovered frontier of lacrosse.  Adrenaline takes a tremendous amount of pride in these stats since they represent a step forward in our mission to make sure our core players achieve their best. This data also evokes company-wide reflection on these past successes and evaluation of past plans, forming a clear vision and path to further improve in the future.

This year’s statistics were highlighted by: Adrenaline success stories, Adrenaline alumni, recruiting statistics, West Coast Starz and overall western lacrosse growth and success.  Adrenaline is once again excited to usher in the new generation of lacrosse athlete that is bonded by lacrosse and united in life.

Adrenaline Success Stories

These stats represent some of the overarching, company-wide achievements.  Last year our event offerings reached 11 different states and two Canadian provinces, something we were thrilled with. This year our event offerings reached 36 different states and virtually all of Canada. We are ecstatic to see how far our reach has extended in just one year. Although we are based in California and still maintain a focus on the western frontier and other fringe markets, we couldn’t be happier with our rapid expansion into new areas. It’s been great to introduce our vision into traditional hotbeds where we were graciously welcomed with open arms and minds.  We are equally proud to have taken the time to devote the necessary resources to bring Adrenaline events to areas where foundations for lacrosse are still being built by dedicated local enthusiasts. It’s very rewarding to have the ability and organizational gusto to be a part of perpetuating the high growth rate of the sport. For more about Adrenaline Successes see our blog at: http://adrln.com/blog/category/recruiting/.

Another very important stat that oftentimes is overshadowed by recruiting statistics is our Awareness Initiative. We’ve exerted a lot of time, effort, and care into this aspect of our business. From last year we have more than doubled our Awareness charity partners and tripled our funding to over $134,000 (and growing). We have innovative concepts and new charity partners coming out that we are very pleased with.  Adrenaline Awareness will continue to be an integral part of our company moving forward. Learn more about our Awareness mission here: http://www.adrln.com/awareness/.

Adrenaline Alumni

Our programs are built with a progression in mind that not only builds players, but also the culture and future of the game.  We are not a lax factory simply churning numbers.  We have a personal and real relationship with all of our athletes that we value and try and extend beyond high school years.  We see our alumni as missionaries who carry along the Adrenaline Movement throughout their careers as players and coaches.  With each and every program we try to come full circle, starting from the most basic level to the most advanced. We take care of our players during every step of their lacrosse careers and ensure that players of every level have a program in place to help guide them along. It’s extremely rewarding for us to see players that have gone through the Adrenaline system and achieve success in their college or professional careers. There are currently 8 Adrenaline Alumni who have played or are currently playing professional lacrosse, including 2012 Tewaaraton winner and Adrenaline Athlete, Peter Baum. It’s the ultimate reward to see such honors reflect the impact of the Adrenaline system. When Adrenaline Athletes, Peter Baum, Erik Krum and Geoff Worley play together in the LXM PRO Tour it is a perfect illustration of their successes in the system, striving to reach their highest potential since they stepped on the field nearly 8 years ago wearing West Coast Starz jerseys.

At the college level in 2013 we saw 10 Adrenaline Alums become Division I All-Americans, 21 make NCAA all-conference teams and 19 make all-league selections as underclassmen. Our top alumni get selected by the Adrenaline Evaluation Team (AET) to play for the Adrenaline Tropics to compete at some of the nation’s top club tournaments. When this info graphic was made we had 4 championships in 2 years. However, the Tropics recently won the Lake Tahoe Tournament for the third time in a row in the Open Division and repeated in the U-19 Division, pushing our total to 6 championships. Our most recent Adrenaline Alumni, the high school class of 2013, are incredibly impressive. The Adrenaline All-American game this year was almost freakish, highlighted by the US lacrosse western player of the year, Lucas Gradinger. The future Terp has been through every single level of the Adrenaline System and joined our program when he was just a 1st grader. We could not be happier for his success and can’t wait to see what the 2013 class does at the college level next year.

Recruiting

Our main goal with our recruiting program is to provide a platform where players can showcase their talents in front of the right college coaches. We take a tremendous amount of care in providing a high level of value and effectiveness to players and recruiters alike by having an educated and informed player advocate team in place, known as the Adrenaline Evaluation Team (AET).  This team works hard to see every player at Adrenaline events, grade them and get them invited to the right event for optimum exposure to ideal collegiate choices.  The AET members become behind the scenes and vocal sideline advocates for our players to find matches with the appropriate level of collegiate play. The perfect harmony results in high commitment rates for high school players and a ton of happy collegiate coaches. We measure this by the Adrenaline College Placement Success Rate (CPSR). The CPSR gives a great insight into how well our recruiting events are working to achieve our main goal of getting players to the next level and helping coaches fill their rosters with high quality lacrosse players that fit in their own systems.

Our CPSRs reached all-time highs for our recruiting events this year and we’re happy with the progress they are making. The level of talent increases exponentially every year and we expect these numbers to continue to improve. The addition of the Adrenaline Black Card event was huge for us and we’re starting to see an extremely high CPSR for the nation’s top recruiting event (.92 CPSR). Other strong recruiting events included the Adrenaline Showcase (.88 CPSR) and the Adrenaline High Rollers (.75 CPSR)

We also put together a graph looking into NCAA programs carrying western players and what percentage of those players came through Adrenaline events. We found that in 2013 there were 333 western players on NCAA rosters and 208 (63%) of them came through Adrenaline program offerings. Looking into these stats a little further and breaking them down by region we found that nearly 90% of the players from California have gone through Adrenaline. What’s even more impressive is the percentage increase for western players now on NCAA rosters. From 2009 to 2013 there has been an increase of 129.6%.  During the same 5-year span we saw an increase of 123% that came through the Adrenaline System and are now playing in the NCAA.

Adrenaline West Coast Starz Club

Our 2014, 2015 and 2016 West Coast Starz teams recently competed in the NSCLA cup in Philadelphia. The NSCLA cup is known to be the premier team-recruiting tournament in the country. Club teams compete for a chance to be recognized as the nation’s top club team. The 2014 and 2015 teams each made it to the finals of the NSCLA Cup where they lost in close games while the 2016 WCS team won the NSCLA cup for their respective division, making them the number one club team in the country for their age group.

Nearly every single player that is a member of the West Coast Starz gets recruited to play in college. The only reason our stat doesn’t read 100% is because there are always outliers that choose a Stanford or USC (who can blame them), but we are confident that the CPSR would be 100% if each player chose to play at the next level.

As the talent pool increased in size, so did the Adrenaline West Coast Starz program. Sectional West Coast Starz teams were created to support the best players from each of the following regions: Northwest, Southern California, Desert and Rocky Mountain regions. The WCS sectional teams attended the Legacy Cup this summer and made a very strong statement in their inaugural year. The 2015 Northwest team was crowned champion of the event for their division and the 2015 So- Cal team lost in the championship. Several players made the All Star game and received great recruiting looks as a result of overall strong play by the all WCS teams.

A stat that really stood out as we dug into the Starz program was how many current high school Starz players there are that have already verbally committed.  When we made this info graphic the number was 137. By the time you are reading it, it will likely be well over 175.

Western Success as a Whole

Company-wide stats are extremely important to us; yet, there is a bigger picture for Adrenaline—the growth and success of western lacrosse as a whole. 96% of Division I teams carried a western player on their roster this year! Think about that from a perspective held just 10 years ago! 96% was up from 87% last year. In Division II we saw 78% of teams carry at least one western player, up from 72% while Division III saw a jump from 46% in 2012 to 59% in 2013.

While discussing the 2013 statistics, CMO and founder of Adrenaline, Alex Cade, stated “We have known for years how extremely important it is for us to take the time to evaluate exactly what our impact is upon the lacrosse landscape.  I am so excited to see this influence growing by the year.  The addition of exciting new initiatives like Adrenaline Awareness allows us to champion the Adrenaline Movement for the new era of lacrosse led by an exciting, young, modern player whose influence extends well beyond the field of play.  As much as we are proud of our influence so far we have much work to do.  We are immediately looking forward to 2014 and leveraging this great company we have built in new and innovative ways to truly serve the real core of lacrosse.  For us lacrosse is the primary focus.”

Adrenaline Competitive Indoor Box Leagues

With the widespread success of Canadian players at the NCAA level, it is foolish to ignore the power of box lacrosse for developing player specific skill sets. Adrenaline Box Lacrosse is carefully designed to teach and practice the authentic box game in order to enhance a players shooting, ball handling and mastery of tight space concepts including the 2 man game. We firmly believe in the value in developing players in a skills specific manner through box style of play. The Adrenaline Box Association, the largest of its kind, consists of multi-team, competitive leagues in San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland, Arizona, Las Vegas, Austin, Fresno and Salt Lake City. Teams compete not only for a city championship but also a sectional title. LXM and NLL box professionals teach the proper intricacies of the game while framing it in a manner that is applicable to a player’s outdoor game enhancement.  The (AET) Adrenaline Evaluation Team chooses the top players from each section to be invited for the ultimate training and competition weekend at the end of the season.

So the summer is over, now what?

Here we are slowly coming out of the maze of the summer recruiting circuit. The summer was aggressive, leaving no stone left unturned. You traveled across country on multiple occasions, lived out of a duffle bag in run-of-the-mill motels, ate Subway seemingly three times a day and put your mind, body, and spirit through the ultimate grind. You played for a great club program, competed in the better team events, attended the best individual showcases and even went to prospect days at colleges you really like.  It’s August finally, providing a short, relaxed break before the fall season and you find yourself trying to make sense of it all…NOW WHAT?

Some of the things to keep in mind at this point:

KEEPING UP WITH THE JONES’S

Don’t worry or focus on where other kids have committed or are committing to colleges. You can’t control the uncontrollable. As a parent you can really help by not letting your kids get caught up on player rankings, commitment announcements or incessantly comparing them to their peers. Every player is different and has a different recruiting experience. The media has created a lot of the apprehension and anxiety in this process, it’s seemingly ubiquitous.

AVOID JARGON

Realize that every schools timeline is different. Steer clear of third party banter and generalizations such as, “All D1 teams are full”, “if you haven’t committed yet, it’s too late”, “That coach is a jerk and is really tough on kids,” etc.  Evaluate carefully what you hear and who you take advice and information from. Avoid the jargon-slinging know it all kids and parents. A quick reality check on the recruitment process—there are about 65 Division I teams, with approximately 45 man rosters, which equates to around 3,000 NCAA Division I players and there are currently 300,000 High School players—Are you good enough, competitive enough and smart enough to be in that 1%?

FOLLOW UP

Reassess your college list and be realistic. You know how well you played this summer and you know how many coaches have or haven’t inquired about you. Your list should contain around 6-10 schools and there should be some diversity on the lists both in divisions, location and academic rigor. After you have reworked your list, it is important that you send a follow-up email to that school expressing your continued interest in the institution. Be certain to remind them who you are, what high school and club team you play for, and what events you attended this summer. Ask the coaches if they were able to see you play at any point over the summer and include your updated highlight reel, along with contact info for your coaches so they can reach out if they want to pursue you.

FILM

Update your film and make a new highlight reel. This is something that is extremely obvious, but something we see kids put off, or forget to follow through on quite often. Time is of the essence, you have just spent lots of time, energy and money on the summer lacrosse tour, it is important you put together an up-to-date video to highlight all that you accomplished. It is best to outsource this process, so that it is done in high quality and is easy to view for coaches who watch hundreds of videos a week.  Sometimes the video is merely a supplemental refresher to coaches who remember seeing you play over summer, sometimes it can be a foot in the door with a staff that wasn’t able to see you or doesn’t remember you from summer, and sometimes it can change a coach’s opinion of you if the video is really good. Coaches see around 7,000 kids a year and maybe they weren’t able to catch you on one of your best days. The video should be between 3-5 minutes and should feature a variety of clips demonstrating your different skill sets.

VISITS

As you begin to focus in on schools and speak with coaches, ask to visit their school to help you gauge their interest and begin the next steps in the process.  It is very important that kids visit the campus of a school before they make decisions. It is extremely disheartening to see players commit to a school without even seeing the campus or getting to meet the team or full coaching staff. We encourage players to plan visits when school is in session. The dead period ends Aug 31st, so trying to schedule a visit for September or October is a great plan. Being able to meet the team, see a practice, sit in on a class and spend some quality time with the coach are all important parts of choosing a school.

GAMEPLAN FOR FALL:

Whether or not you are close to committing to a school, it is important that you begin to get organized for what your fall/winter will look like. If you are playing a fall sport, you will need to be very careful when navigating your calendar, and make sure you aren’t over committing. The fall is a very big period for recruiting and it’s important that you are getting exposure at the right events. Check with your club team and see what events your team will be attending. Examine the best individual showcases out there and be selective with what you register for. If there are certain events you’d like to attend, be sure to ask your HS/Club coach to recommend you. If there are certain colleges you are really keen on, it is worth exploring the option of attending their prospect day. It is also important to hone in on your academics and for many of the boys that means prepping and readying for the SAT/ACT test.  In addition, with all of the showcases and game play, it’s important that players take the time to get back to drills and fundamentals to improve their skills (hint: wall ball, speed ladder, weight room).
