Foss is Boss: A Safe Guide to Healthy Weight Gain

Welcome to the first installment of my now officially named, "Foss is Boss" training blog. Check back often for more training tips and be sure to check out http://www.adrln.com/lacrosse/training/  for information on all of the Adrenaline training programs!

It would be safe to say that the question I get asked the most by parents and players is about nutrition.  While getting on a structured weight training routine will yield results in strength, it will do little to increase weight gain.  In order to gain weight you have to eat.  This week’s blog entry should give players a basic plan to get the best results from your hard work in the gym.

To gain weight, you need to consume more calories than you are burning.  So, we either move less (not an option for athletes) or eat more.  The first thing you need to figure out is how many calories you are burning, so you can then find out how many calories you need to consume.  The average teenager burns about 15 calories per day/per pound of body weight.  This means that a sedentary 150lb. kid needs to eat 2,250 calories a day just to maintain his/her weight.

So what’s the magic number?  There isn’t one.  A lot of this is trial and error.  What has worked for my clients is 25 calories per pound of body weight/per day.  Consuming 25 calories per day/per pound of body weight should see you gain about a pound per week.  The best way to do measure your progress is to weigh yourself at the beginning of the each week and then again at the end of each week.  If you are not seeing the results you want then you need to adjust your plan.  Make sure you write down your weights every week.

Protein is another important component of gaining lean body mass.  To build lean body mass, athletes need to eat at least 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight.  I recommend 1 ½ grams per pound of body weight/per day.   For weight gain, about 20% of your calories should come from protein.

Carbohydrates are an important component as well.  Carbohydrates are basically the energy we use to function.  Think of it as gas in the fuel tank of your car.  If you are not consuming enough carbs your body will use the protein you eat as an energy source, which is not good.  For weight gain, about 60% of your calories should come from carbohydrates.

Fats are also an important part of any diet.  It is vital in vitamin absorption and helps protect vital organs from injury to name a few.  Think of this as the oil in the car.  It acts as a lubricant and makes everything run smoothly.  For weight gain, about 20% of your calories should come from fats.

Preparation is another area where programs succeed or fail.  Having a plan for the week is this simplest way to see results.   How do you know if you’re in a surplus of calories if you don’t write it down?   Keeping a journal of what you ate, the portions you consumed, and the times of the day you ate will all help in seeing great results.  How can you do well on the test if you don’t take notes during class?

Here is the formula to figure out how many calories you need to eat per day to see a 1-pound weight increase per week.

  1. Body weight X 25 = the amount of calories you need to consume per day

Example:

  • 150lb. athlete X 25 = 3,750 calories per day

Here are the formulas to figure out what your macronutrients (protein, carbs, and fats) should be each day.

To figure out how much protein you need to consume:

  1. The number of calories you need to consume X .20 = calories from protein
  2. Calories from protein divided by 4 = amount of protein in grams

Example:

  • 3, 750 calories X .20 = 750 calories from protein
  • 750 calories from protein / 4 = 188 grams of protein

To figure out how many carbohydrates: you need to consume:

  1. The number of calories you need to consume X .60 = calories from carbs
  2. Calories from carbs / 4 = amount of carbs per day

Example:

  • 3,750 calories X .60 = 2,250 calories from carbohydrates
  • 2,250 calories from carbs / 562 =  grams of carbs

To figure out how much fat you need to consume:

  1. The number of calories you need to consume X .20 = calories from fats
  2. Calories from carbs divided by 9 = amount of carbs in grams

Example:

  • 3, 750 calories X .20 = 750 calories from fat
  • 750 calories from fat / 9 = 83 grams of fat

Below I have provided a basic meal plan for a 150 lb. athlete who is looking to gain weight.  You may use this as a reference point and adjust it to suit your needs based on the formulas above.  This meal plan does not take into consideration any food allergies so please make the necessary changes.

Sample meal plan for a 3,750 calorie diet:

Breakfast:

  • 1 cup of oatmeal
  • 2 eggs, cooked
  • 8oz. glass of 2% milk

~ or ~

“On the go” shake

  • Blend the following ingredients and you got a quick meal for breakfast
    • 1 scoop of vanilla flavored whey protein
    • 8 oz. of apple juice
    • 1 cup of oatmeal
    • 1 banana
    • 2 tbsp. of peanut butter
    • Handful of ice cubes

AM Snack:

  • Peanut Butter & jelly sandwich
  • Banana
  • 8 oz. of 2% chocolate milk

Lunch

  • Sandwich
  • 4-6 slices of deli meat
  •  2 slices of cheese
  • 2 slices of whole grain bread
  • Vegetables
  • Condiments
  • Small bag of chips or pretzels

PM Snack

  • 2 oz. of almonds or mixed nuts
  • Piece of fruit

Post-Workout Shake

  • Mix together and have within 30 minutes after your workout
    • 8 oz. of apple juice
    • 2 scoops of whey protein (no more than 30 grams)

Dinner

  • 6-8oz. of meat
  • 2 cups of complex carbs (starches, whole grains, pasta)
  • Vegetables, as much as you’d like

Bedtime Snack

  • 16oz. glass of 2% chocolate milk
  • 1 cup of cereal

This is just a general guideline.  As you are monitoring your weight and food intake you may need to make adjustments.  A realistic and healthy goal is about 1 lb. per week.  Not every person is the same.  If you are not seeing the results that you want I would recommend adding more food as opposed to moving less.  Don’t forget that lacrosse is a skills sport and bigger is not always better.   Your goal should be to increase your muscle gain while still maintaining your flexibility and speed.

Please feel free to reach out to me with any specific questions you may have.

All Fight No Flight Moment:

Being on the field in my first LXM PRO game with guys I grew up idolizing gave me two options: Shy away and play scaared or act and play like i deserved to be there. I realized before the game started I was going to give it everything I had. No Flight.

ESSENTIAL ITEM :

The LIFESTYLE KHAKI SHORTS. I have a few pairs and pretty much live in them. Great for coaching, golfing, wearing out, whatever-great pair of shorts.

Bio / Accolades :

I grew up in Coronado CA. I played lacrosse for the Coronado Islanders before heading off the the complete opposite part of the country for college. I went to the University of Vermont where I was a 4x Team Captain and top 50 scorer. I medically redshirted my freshman year, so it's not like I was named captain as a true Freshman or anything. After a great five years at UVM I come home with a degree in Business Administration/Marketing and starting working for Adrenaline. When I'm not playing lacrosse, golfing, or surfing, I'm the Senior Marketing Manager at Adrenaline (Or maybe it's the other way around).

Team STX Takes the Win in Dallas

$

Dallas, TX- Team STX left no room for mercy in the opening minutes of the LXMPRO 214 game, presented by Champion, kicking off with a 5-0 stride. The rest of the game was a teaser, with Maverik United chipping away minute by minute, only to leave the field one goal shy of a win. The final score was 10-9 in favor of Team STX.

The first whistle blew and ignited a fire in the Team STX attack who immediately produced four unanswered goals, each from different players: Kyle Harrison, Xander Ritz, Sam Bradman, and Peter Baum.  Maverik United had a few opportunities in the first few minutes, but their initial fast break attack was shutdown by Matt Russell in cage. Team STX’s defensive unit, which was named MVP of the game, followed suit and denied Maverik United’s attack any easy lanes. When Maverik United gained possession after the 4-0 deficit, Team STX stripped them of the ball, sending it up field so Adrenaline Athlete, Geoff Worley, could assist Adrenaline Athlete, Peter Baum, for a back-to-back goal.

Maverik United found room to capitalize on Johnny Rodriguez’s first save as he cleared the ball up field to get the team on the board before the first quarter ended. Shamel Bratton ripped one to make the score 5-1. Maverik United’s newfound momentum carried into the second quarter with an identical coast to coast play; Johnny Rodriguez shut down Sam Bradman, clearing downfield to newcomer, Aaron Prosser who converted his first goal of the game. Sean Lindsay found the back of the net for MavU to make the score 5-3 in favor of Team STX. Unsettled with a two-goal lead, Team STX doubled the gap to four before the half. Headed by a save from Matt Russell, arguably the ticket to Team STX’s constant lead, Kyle Harrison sniped a pass to Geoff Worley for an inside dunk past Rodriguez. A series of saves on both ends amounted to an interception by Andrew Casimir to allow Xander Ritz to secure another Team STX point to make the score 7-3 at half.

The back and fourth offensive spikes on either squad continued into the second half. Maverik United posted their second hot streak of the game, scoring three back-to-back goals from Brandon Corp and two from Adrenaline Athlete, Erik Krum. Krum’s second goal of the second half culminated from a pass-and-move approach, which was not common in this game. Zach Brenneman did a double dodge and pass to Sean Lindsay for an underneath shovel pass to Krum with the goalie fake to find some off-side-hip twine. The third quarter ended in another two-goal lead, 8-6 in favor of Team STX.

In the fourth quarter Maverik United was quick to respond with each goal scored by Team STX, turning the last fifteen minutes into a rapid-fire shootout. Billy Bitter stepped up huge in the fourth quarter, sticking two goals following Kyle Harrison and Peter Baum on the other end. The Team STX defensive unit earned its MVP honors in the last minutes as each shot was contested and allowed Matt Russell to come up with the ball at least two more times. With under three minutes to go in the game, Bitter was able to sneak one by to complete a hat trick and bring the game within one.  Following a timeout, players took the field with 1:20 minutes left in the game. Team STX put high pressure on the Maverik United attack, resulting in an incredible takeaway check by Tommy Kehoe and scoop up by Maxx Davis to solidify the win.

For those unable to attend the game, tune in to www.youtube.com/TLN and watch the full game today.

After the traditional team handshake and cool down stretch, the LXMPROs crossed the field to meet eager fans for a post-game Knockaround autograph session. Players lined up to get posters, clothing, and equipment signed by the LXM PROs. When the autograph session ended, regular tournament games resumed to finish off the day.

The Mokarow Polo Farms surpassed expectations as an ideal venue to host the LXM|ATS: Dallas event this past weekend. With five fields and endless land to accommodate on-field parking, high school and middle school clubs teams traveled from all over Texas to participate in two days worth of games and LXM PRO clinics. Additionally, the local lacrosse community got a taste of the accompanying LXM PRO, presented by Champion, element on Friday night when eleven LXM PROs attended positional clinics between Highland Park and The Episcopal School of Dallas.

Saturday games were in full swing by 8:00 AM CST and ran until 1:00 PM, just in time for players to catch the 1:15 PM LXM PRO game. A “cat and mouse” performance of back and forth offensive hot streaks ended in a one-goal advantage for Team STX who nabbed a 10-9 win over Maverik United. Team STX now leads the LXM PRO series 5-2. After the game the LXM PRO players met their fans for a post-game Knockaround autograph session. One last round of tournament games resumed after the LXM PRO portion to close out the first day. Team records in Day 1 determined the division rankings for the following day. The top four teams in the high school and middle school division entered the playoffs, with the first two Sunday games kicking off with the high school division semi-final playoffs. The Woodlands notched double digits to advance to the finals, 10-3, while Panthers Lacrosse only snuck by the McNeil Mavericks by one, with a final score of 7-6. The middle school division semis resulted in Texas United triumphing Highland Park Gold, 10-1, while the other Highland Park Blue team took down the ATX LaxBats 8-3 in a well-fought battle.

The high school and middle school championship games took place simultaneously at 12:00 PM. The Woodlands offensive powerhouse, which had put up double digits on the board for all five of their tournament games, claimed the STX High School Division Championship title with a 13-6 win over Panthers Lacrosse. Highland Park Blue went 3-1 leading up to the middle school finals, with their only loss having been against Texas United MS who they then faced in the finals. Highland Park Blue was out for revenge and snagged the Gatorade Middle School Division Championship title with a 6-0 shutout victory.

Thanks to our onsite sponsors Champion, STX, and Gatorade for helping make this event great, as well as to Lean Machine and Prairie House for providing on site food options!

The next LXM|ATS event will occur in Tucson on November 23rd -24th. If your team is not signed up to play in the Tucson tournament and you would like to be,  Wild Card Starz is open to anyone who is interested playing in the event amd needs a team!

No Silly Questions: Still Looking for Fun Activities This Holiday Season?

As an Adrenaline Athlete, I hear one question asked far more than any other. From both parents and young players, I am asked constantly, “What are the best ways to improve basic lacrosse skills.” The beauty of lacrosse, for those new to the game, is that every player's stick skills can always improve, no matter what level of player you might be. One of the best parts of living in California, which I am finally enjoying, is that the weather affords us the chance to play lacrosse outside YEAR ROUND!

I know that for me personally, the holiday season was always a tricky one as a lacrosse player, particularly as my skills evolved and I began playing higher levels of lacrosse. Growing up in Portland, Oregon, where youth lacrosse began at 6th grade, and consisted mostly of the Spring lacrosse season and some summer programs, my winter skill work was mostly tedious wall ball and shooting, when the weather allowed. I wished that there were some supervised, instructional opportunities for me to work on my game before the Spring got going, so that I could hit the ground running and be ahead of my peers.

While shooting and wall ball are great tools to improve your lacrosse skills, playing together with other players, under the guidance of skilled coaching, is always important as well! At Adrenaline’s Turkey Day and Holiday Camps, young players will have the opportunity to learn from some of the area’s best coaches, and improve their lacrosse skills in a fun environment over the holidays.

There’s no better way to get the kids out of the house for a while during stressful Thanksgiving and Holiday break hours than some quality lacrosse time. These camps are perfect for boys and girls 1st-8th grade.

Be sure to check out these great programs, and be sure to check back next week for the next "No Silly Questions" blog:

Orange Coast College Hosts the Famed Adrln High Rollers: SoCal, Nov. 16th-17th

Coming off the tremendous success of the first ever High Rollers: Midwest event, Adrenaline will head to Costa Mesa, CA for the famed High Rollers: SoCal edition. Orange Coast College will provide an ideal venue for a great weekend of top level lacrosse with a variety of food and retail vendors. The Adrenaline High Rollers product has become well-established over the past seven years and boasts a strong recruiting presence of 60-75 NCAA college coaches year after year. Last year’s Adrenaline High Rollers event reached an ever-growing College Placement Success Rate (CPSR) of 75%, one of many game-changing Adrenaline recruitment statistics. A growing list of attending recruiters can be found here.

This year marks the eighth annual Adrenaline High Rollers. The Southern California event has evolved into the premier Fall/ Winter recruiting event in the West, earning immediate waiting list status as players eagerly await primetime invitations for only 375 coveted spots. With players traveling from ten different western states (AZ, CA, CO, GA, HI, NV, OR, TX, UT, and WA, ID) and three Canadian provinces (Alberta, BC, and Manitoba), expectations are at an all time high for the much anticipated 2013 High Rollers High School and Middle School lineups. The High Rollers event structure guarantees each player four games to ensure maximum exposure to college recruiters who in turn benefit from the ability to thoroughly watch players currently on their recruiting radar, and scout unfamiliar players who showcase definite next-level potential. Players will also participate in recruiter-led clinics throughout the day that focus on specific positional training and NCAA level drills. These clinics provide college coaches with a hands-on opportunity to evaluate and instruct players in an intimate setting where they can see how players react to new situations, concepts, and instruction. Click here for the 2013 High Rollers schedule.

There will be a break in regular tournament play on Saturday for the SoCal High School All Star game. Recruiters and the Adrenaline Evaluation Team (AET) will nominate the top players from each roster to compete in the game. All Star players will receive additional Adrenaline reversibles and shorts. As a proud sponsor of the High Rollers event, STX will complete the outfit with various top-of-the-line protective gear including gloves and arm pads from the StallionHD and Cell2 collections; goalies will receive the Shield Pro gloves. One team from the Middle School division will be named “All-Tournament Team” and also receive STX protective gear in addition to an STX Sidewinder backpack. Other proud sponsors of High Rollers include KnockaroundSKLZ, and Gatorade.

All High Rollers: SoCal primetime players will be decked out in head-to-toe Adrenaline Treatment and receive a one-of-a-kind Adrenaline High Rollers gear pack, compliments of the Adrenaline Design team. Each player will be outfitted in custom matching Black and Gold 50s Vegas themed jerseys and shorts, accompanied by a custom High Rollers T-shirt. In an effort to increase recruiter visibility, each player will wear a pair of Adrenaline “J Train” Socks from the Adrenaline Movement line that will guarantee Dryness and Comfort during play. Players will wear these socks in different colors to help recruiters identify players by graduation year: 2014s- Kelly Green w/ White, 2015s- Carolina Blue w/ White, 2016s- Lime w/ White, and 2017s- Maroon w/ White. These socks feature the AdrenaSoft fabric with a reinforced toe and heel design to ensure comfort and durability. These socks also feature the AdrenaMesh technology that keeps the foot dry during athletic competition. An Adrenaline Retail presence will be on site selling hard to find Adrenaline apparel, including items from 2013 Fall/Winter line that hit stores late November.

Adrenaline will kick off the weekend with another recruit component, a first come first serve informative parent recruitment seminar on Friday night preceding the event. This seminar will provide invaluable insight into the recruitment process with information on the “do’s” and “don’ts” of recruiting and guidelines on how to make the right decisions. Adrenaline Vice President, Rory Doucette, and Adrenaline Recruiting Director, Jono Zissi, will lead a panel of college coaches from various NCAA and MCLA divisions, including Denver University (DI), Fairfield University (DI), University of Notre Dame  (DI), Harvard University (DI), Dominican University (DII), Colby College (DIII), Tufts University (DIII) and SDSU (MCLA). West Coast Starz Sectional: Players Who Impressed

This past weekend the West Coast Starz Sectional teams took the field in Maryland and made a huge statement at the Ultimate Performance Lacrosse tournament (UpLax). Playing in front of wide array of college recruiters and against some of the best competition in the country, the Starz teams had a strong showing, winning a combined 19 games on the weekend and having several players stand out from a recruiting perspective. Some guys who impressed:

Yuta Murata (2015- Midfield): This shifty, slippery, two handed middie was arguably the best player on the field on Day 1 of the event. Flawlessly getting to good spots on the field and sticking goals on the run with either hand, Murata really stood out. He also showed ability to play good defense despite being undersized.

Garrett Coates (2016- Defense/LSM): The Texas product was consistent and steady all weekend. Coates showed great feet and position, as well as a good IQ for team defense.

Jacob Patterson (2016- Attack): Patterson took a little bit to get into a groove, but was firing on all cylinders on Day 2. He showed some very sleek, box-like moves and unloaded a lefty cannon a number of times on Sunday.

Cody Graden (2014- Attack): The Canadian product was physical and assertive all weekend. Graden showed a knack for finding the net and had a good left hand. He uses his sticky frame well and isn’t afraid to turn the corner from X.

Owen Peterson (2016- LSM): Peterson was everywhere this weekend. He showed great speed, ability to cover, and stay on hands. He even had a very good stick pushing transition. Peterson is a player to look out for who makes up for his lack of size with toughness and good angles.

Patrick McNeil (2017- Midfield): This 6’ 3" product showed tremendous potential all weekend with his big frame and extremely good athleticism. McNeil gets downhill well and is also impactful as a two way middie, playing great defense and showing the speed to chase guys down from behind.

Joe Theuer (2017- Goalie): Theuer was solid all weekend, at times singlehandedly keeping his team in games. He showed great communiation skills and a good ability to clear the ball- something most young goalies struggle with early on.

Shane Sharp (2016- Defense): Two different college recruiters commented that Sharp reminded them of the great Princeton Defenseman, Christian Cook. Sharpe is physical, steady, and just plain tough to get around.

Hayden Baker (2016- Midfield): The Texas middie showed a knack for finding the cage and a level of athleticisim that separated him from the rest of the players on the field. He had a nose for the goal and drew several flags as he refused to be derailed on his dodges.

Jojo Biddle & Mitchell Mapes (2016- Attackman): The pair combined for several goals on the weekend and really stood out. Biddle has really developed physically and showed a hard lefty dodge from X and a nice lefty finish off ball. Mapes is a slippery attackman and a very cerebral player who does a good job feeling out and baiting his defender to set up his inside roll.

Matt Trowbridge (2016- Goalie): Trow was one of the best goalies at the event. Extremely athletic and great out of cage, Trowbridge is also a tremendous stopper and a true field general.

Other players to note: Tristan Ruh (2015/Attack), Tyler Billig (2016/Attack), Mason Barnill (2014/Defense), Bryson Taylor (2016/Defense), Riley Phillips (2015/Midfield), Caden Wolfson (2017/Defense), Josh When (2015/LSM), & Kosta Dalis (2016/Defense).

Foss is Boss: Adrenaline Training Guide to Safe Weight Loss

Last week we went over how to safely add weight as a player, so this week I will be covering how to lose it.  Even though the majority of high school players are looking to gain, there are still other players that would benefit from being lighter on their feet.  Lacrosse is a speed and skill sport and bigger is not always better.  There are significant benefits for athletes looking to shed some excess bodyweight.  Increasing your agility, speed, and quickness, as well as less pressure on your joints and ligaments are just a few benefits.

To lose weight, you will need to burn more calories than you consume.  So, we either eat less, move more, or a combination of the two.   The first thing to figure out is how many calories you are burning, so you can then find out how many calories you need to consume.  The average teenager burns about 15 calories per day/per pound of body weight.  This means that a 150lb. kid needs to eat 2, 250 calories a day just to maintain his/her weight.

So what’s the magic number?  There isn’t one.  A lot of this is trial and error.  What has worked for my clients is 10 calories per pound of body weight/per day.  Consuming 10 calories should see you lose about a pound per week.  The best way to monitor results is to weigh yourself at the beginning of the each week and then again at the end of each week.  If you’re not seeing the results you want then you need to adjust your plan.  Make sure you write this down every week.

Even though we are reducing calories, it is important to get the correct amount of nutrients to ensure a healthy diet.

Protein is an important component of gaining lean body mass.  To build lean body mass, athletes need to eat at least 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight.  I recommend 2 grams per pound of body weight/per day.   For weight loss, about 40% of your calories should come from protein.

Carbohydrates are an important component as well.  Carbohydrates are basically the energy we use to go.  Think of it as gas in the fuel tank of your car.  If you are not consuming enough carbs, your body will use the protein you eat as an energy source; not good.  For weight loss, about 40% of your calories should come from carbohydrates.

Fats are also an important part of any diet.  It is vital in vitamin absorption and protects vital organs from injury to name a few.  Think of this as the oil in the car.  It acts as a lubricant and makes everything run smoothly.  For weight loss, about 20% of your calories should come from fats.

Preparation is another area where programs succeed or fail.  Having a plan for the week is this simplest way to see results.   How do you know if you’re in a deficit of calories if you don’t write it down?   Keeping a journal of what you ate, the portions you consumed, and the times of the day you ate will all help in seeing great results.  How can you do well on the test if you don’t take notes during class?

Here is the formula to figure out how many calories you need to eat per day to see a 1-pound weight increase per week.

  1. Body weight X 10 = the amount of calories you need to consume per day

Example:

  • 200lb. athlete X 10 = 2,000 calories per day

Here are the formulas to figure out what your macronutrients (protein, carbs, and fats) should be each day.

To figure out how much protein you need to consume:

  1. The number of calories you need to consume X .40 = calories from protein
  2. Calories from protein divided by 4 = amount of protein in grams

Example:

  • 2, 000 calories X .40 =  800 calories from protein
  • 800 calories from protein / 4 = 200 grams of protein

To figure out how many carbohydrates: you need to consume:

  1. The number of calories you need to consume X .40 = calories from carbs
  2. Calories from carbs divided by 4 = amount of carbs per day

Example:

  • 2,000 calories X .40 = 800 from carbohydrates
  • 800 calories from carbs / 4 = 200 grams of carbs

To figure out how much fat you need to consume:

  1. The number of calories you need to consume X .20 = calories from fats
  2. Calories from carbs divided by 9 = amount of carbs in grams

Example:

  • 2,000 calories X .20 = 400 calories from fat
  • 400 calories from fat / 9 = 45 grams of fat

Here is a sample meal plan for a 2,000 calorie diet:

 Breakfast:

  • 1 egg
  • 1 piece of whole grain toast w/ 1 tbsp. of peanut butter

AM Snack:

  • Granola Bar
  • apple

Lunch

  • Sandwich
  • 4 slices of deli meat
  •  1 slice of cheese
  • 2 slices of whole grain bread
  • Vegetables
  • Condiments
  • Small bag of pretzels

Pre-workout Snack

  • Banana

Post-Workout Snack

8oz. of 2% chocolate milk

Dinner

  • 3-4oz. of meat
  • 1 cup of complex carbs (starches, whole grains)
  • Vegetables

Bedtime

  • ½ cup of greek yogurt
  • 1 oz. of berries

Again, this is just a general guideline.  As you are monitoring your weight and food intake you may need to make adjustments.  Not every person is the same.  If you do not see results I do not recommend decreasing your caloric intake, rather, increase your activity level.  These are still active kids that need nutrients for energy and keep up with the rigors of academics and athletics.  If they are in too much of a deficit they will be tired or sluggish.  With weight loss it is also important to listen to your body and adjust your plan based on how you feel.

Adrln High Rollers: SoCal, Top Players Who Impressed

As Adrenaline High Rollers enters its 8th year, this weekend saw an impressive lineup of talent and a sideline of over 65 NCAA college recruiters. Hosted at the beautiful venue of Orange Coast College, this facility has three perfectly manicured fields, including one stadium, that are easy to manuever from one to another for  recruiters and families alike. While the event had some fiercely competitive battles all day long and saw some very solid talent across the board, here are some players who impressed:

Jake Griffin (2015/Goalie): Griffin was impressive and steady all day, finsihing off Day 1 in the All Star game with 8 saves.

Spencer Small (2016/Midfield): Small opened up the day with a 5-goal effort and continued to make plays all day. The shifty midfielder has a great change of direction and shoots well coming out of his roll dodge.

Cole Wolfson (2015/Attack): Wolfson was one of the most impressive players in the All Star game with several points and played with a level of confidence we haven’t seen from him before. He had several strong takes and made  good decisions with the ball.

Ryan Klose (2016/Attack): Klose can dodge, feed, and use his frame to lean on guys and then get separation. He plays with tremendous control and poise.

Colton Michel (2015/Attack): Michel showed good speed and toughness. He moves well without the ball and seemed to be in the right place at the right time all day long.

Broderick Vitalie & Jason Simaan (FOGOs): Vitale and Simaan are FOGO’s that were literally dominant on the day and helped their teams to countless possessions.

Sammy Edwards (2015/ Midfield): Despite battling a cold, Edwards started off the All Star game with a great goal down the alley, firing a shot into the opposite corner and then moments later threading a nice skip to the back pipe for an assist. When Edwards can get his hands free he is one of the best shooters in the country.

Owen Peterson (2016/LSM): Peterson is a fast, quick, pesky, relentless defender who is great off the ground. He showed tremendous stamina and ability to steal the ball and take it down the field. Peterson is agreesive, physical, and precise with his checks.

Players will get another chance to showcase their skills in front of over 65+ recruiters. Check out a full list of attending recruiters here.

Adrln High Rollers: SoCal in Review

Adrenaline rolled out the “green carpet” this past weekend for approximately 400 primetime players with a HS lineup that was laden with collegiate prospects. With one grass field and two turf fields in close proximity to one another, 65+ recruiters meandered between different sidelines exclusively dedicated their scouting efforts. “I’ve seen every kind of recruiter from all over the country,” shares Sam McPeak, a player from San Diego. “It’s great to see recruiters like Syracuse and other east coast powerhouses showing interest in what is going on out here on the west coast. It confirms there’s a lot of growth here.”

The weekend began Friday evening with a parent recruitment seminar that housed 175+ parents in a hotel conference room. Adrenaline Recruiting Director Jono Zissi hosted the seminar, accompanied by a panel of nine college coaches. A live broadcast of this seminar can be found here.

Players stepped on the field as early as 6:00 AM on Saturday for a full day of games, NCAA clinics, and a SKLZ Combine. When players were not showcasing their skills on the playing field, they were able to test their vertical jump (Highest: 33 in.- Karter Ferrin, ‘14/OR), reactive agility (electronically recorded), and shot speed (Fastest: 91.1 MPH- Raphael Vargus, ‘15, and 89.1- Matthew Harris, ’19).

Saturday events went well into the evening, finishing out the day with the much-anticipated High School All Star game before players headed back to the hotel for game film analysis and a player recruitment seminar. Team SKLZ had a hefty initial offensive streak that put them in a comfortable lead right off the bat, making it difficult for Team STX to ever really make a comeback. Team SKLZ took the win 12-7 over Team STX and had six different goal scorers. Cole Wolfson (2015) and Jake Schleppy (2015) led the attack with three goals and one assist apiece, with Ryan Klose following close behind with two goals and one assist. Other players on Team SKLZ who contributed to the win were Evan Price (1), Colton Michel (2), and Sammy Edwards (1). Seven players on Team STX answered Team SKLZ’s offensive run, including Matthew Manfredi, Samuel Harnisch, Samuel Horning, Spencer Small, Michael Rodriguez, Hayden Baker, and Logan Olmsted who scored one goal apiece. The faceoff specialists on each team, Henry Hollen and Broderick Vitalie for Team STX and Jason Simaan for Team SKLZ, went evenly matched. These three players headed into the all-star game dominating the X in regular tournament play. As with any showcase all-star game, the goalies saw a ton of shots. Jake Griffin and Michael Marinelli both stepped up to make 5+ saves in the half, with Tony Waltenburg and Gordon Bowden making some crucial stops as well.

See full rosters of the HS All Stars here.

With the exception of a middle school clinic, the Sunday schedule consisted strictly of games to ensure recruiters got the best opportunity to see players in a game setting. Recruiters and parents alike enjoyed the mixed classes per team. Recruiters were able to scout players from all age levels per game, and parents enjoyed seeing how their kids stacked up against the other age groups and “just got after it” as Colorado parent, Gus Kreuzer, put it. As a parent of a 9th grade player, Tony Yusunas enjoyed watching his son play against the older kids because it allowed his son “to stretch himself and to see how he fairs against the older kids, especially when he’s about to play high school lacrosse for the first time this spring.” Although players were easily identified by their socks that coordinated with their graduation year, players were also identified by their helmets that matched their high school or club team uniform. After speaking with players on several different teams, you could tell the level of camaraderie that recruiting events create is unique. "I've never met any of the kids on my team before, but we've played two games and I feel like I've been playing with them for a while. I've made some good friends," says Sam McPeak. Cameron Ewen, a younger sibling onsite to support his brother, mentioned that Tyler was not only excited to come down from Canada to get exposure but that he was looking forward to seeing a lot of his West Coast Starz friends that he only sees a few times a year. "He texts them every day," said Cameron.

Check out a list of "Players Who Impressed" here.

At 11:30 AM, Adrenaline announced the Middle School All-Tournament Team. Players who made the list were given custom High Rollers backpacks and arm pads, compliments of STX who was also on site giving demos of their latest products.

Check out who made the MS All Tournament Team here.

The Adrenaline Mobile Retail truck was on site selling Adrln apparel, including items from the Fall/Winter line that were well received by the masses. Vendor Village was also filled with food options from California Pizza Kitchen, California Grill Truck, and Maui Wowi. Additionally, Gatorade activated a tent full of G-series products available to all attendees, but specifically to help enhance the players' performance throughout the day. Knockaround sunglasses is also a proud sponsor of Adrenaline High Rollers.
